I have been programming Jazz on Boston radio for more than 28 years, starting at WBUR in the late 70�s. The last 22 plus years have been here at WFNX. The Jazz Brunch is currently one of the longest continuously running Sunday Jazz show on Commercial radio in the country and in the Boston market. The Challenge from day1 has been to figure out how to program a Jazz show that would appeal to the station�s primary demographic, an audience much younger than your typical jazz listener, while still honoring the core Jazz audience. So the show has been designed not to be the type of Jazz show typically heard on Boston radio. While you will hear many of the straight ahead Jazz artists featured elsewhere on the radio in Boston, you are guaranteed to hear many artists who stretch the boundaries of what could be considered legitimate Jazz. I have always considered Jazz to be more of a Big Umbrella music, able to absorb influences from around the World and influence different music�s from the rest of the World. That doesn�t mean that the history of Jazz or it�s classic artists are ignored. Jazz depends on the recognition of it�s history but it should not be constrained by that history. Long before there was a term called World Music, The Jazz Brunch was programming the varied music�s that make up the diverse African Diaspora whether it was from Africa, the Caribbean or Latin America. Artists like Hugh Masakela, Sunny Ade, Manu Dibongo, Toure Kunda, Salif Keita, Los Van Van, Irakere, Eddie Palmieri, Tito Puente, Milton Nascimento, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso and many others have been an integral part of FNX�s Jazz programming and since my tenure at WBUR in the late 70�s. WFNX and the Jazz Brunch were the first to begin introducing Boston to Acid Jazz in the early 90�s and the funkier side of Jazz, whether it was Soul Jazz from the 70�s, now making a comeback, to the turntable influences of guys like DJ Logic, DJ Shadow etc. This philosophy continues to drive the Jazz brunch. We will continue to push the boundaries each week and with luck change how you, as a listener approach this diverse musical heritage.

The Jazz Brunch is the longest running specialty show here at FNX. We have been here on Sundays from the first week the station went on the air. One of the reasons for that is that the audience tuning in each week has been very devoted to music we have played over the years. It has always been a privilege for me to be able to do this each week and to have the opportunity to present music to such a great group of listeners.

I also don�t want to forget Mike Adams. Mike came to FNX from WERS , He has been an integral part of the show for more than 10 years now holding down the on air chair in those early morning hours. Thanks Mike, I get to sleep in a little.
