WFNX, BOSTON AND NEW ENGLAND’S ONE AND ONLY INDEPENDENT ALERNATIVE ROCK RADIO STATION ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR LIVE ONLINE STREAMING
June 25, 2012 (Boston, MA) - The Phoenix Media/Communications Group confirmed today that its popular alternative rock radio station, WFNX, will continue as a web-only streaming station after its terrestrial broadcast radio signal, 101.7 FM, is sold to Clear Channel later this summer. The WFNX stream is available now at WFNX.com and via free mobile apps, which also allow listeners to hear some of the station's greatest moments, including historic live performances by Nirvana, Radiohead, Weezer, Pavement, No Doubt, Death Cab for Cutie, and many more. Listeners can expect the online stream to include the same quality programming that has made WFNX legendary on the airwaves: cutting-edge music that introduces listeners to their new favorite bands. In the weeks to come, WFNX will be unveiling on-air programming that celebrates WFNX's nearly 30-year history, including special guests and format-busting programs.
“We are excited to be able to maintain a unique, independent spirit and a commitment to serving the greater Boston and New England community with the best there is in new music,” says Stephen Mindich, founder and CEO of The Phoenix Media/Communications Group. “With insightful, entertaining programming, WFNX will continue to live online. We haven’t missed a beat and we look forward to announcing more exciting news and developments around our new online broadcast in the coming weeks,” says Mindich.
In the meantime, WFNX reveals the following calendar of programming:
• Listener / Band Takeovers, Monday 6/25 – Friday 6/29 @ 9am, 1pm and 7pm
Listeners and Bands will take over the airwaves and play their favorite WFNX songs
• Z to A Countdown, Monday 7/2 – Wednesday 7/4
WFNX.com will revisit history and artists that were integral over the years
• WFNX Rewind, Thursday 7/5 – Friday – 7/20
WFNX on-air personalities (from 1983 – 2012) will return to host shows throughout the month
• 101.7 FM Sendoff Party, Saturday 7/21
Special guests will be live in the studio. Bands will return to play live in the green room.
WFNX is known as one of the most cutting-edge music stations in the region where ardent fans turn to find new music and artists. In May of 2012, Clear Channel Media and Entertainment and the Phoenix Media/Communications Group announced that Clear Channel purchased the 101.7 radio signal from MCC Broadcasting Company, Inc., pending FCC approval. MCC Broadcasting is part of the Phoenix Media/Communications Group and is located in Lynn, MA. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. WFNX will remain on the air during the time it takes to complete the FCC approval process, and events and concerts will take place as scheduled. Listeners can stay tuned to the music by turning to 101.7 WFNX-FM or by visiting www.wfnx.com or www.thephoenix.com.
