FNX FILES [FRIDAY - 1/4]
Death Cab For Cutie will release the follow-up to their major label debut, Plans, this spring, and the group promises to surprise fans with a mix of "the most uptempo, upbeat Death Cab songs as well as some of our saddest." Bassist Nick Harmer spoke to Billboard, revealing some of the new song titles to include "Bixby Canyon Bridge," "The Ice Is Getting Thinner" and "I Will Possess Your Heart," a nine-minute song which Harmer describes as Death Cab "[hitting] our stride... we looked at the habitual things we've done in the past and tried to move beyond them."
Guitarist/producer Chris Walla adds that the as-yet-untitled record is "really weird. It's really, really good, I think, but it's totally a curve ball, and I think it's gonna be a really polarizing record. But I'm really excited about it. It's really got some teeth. The landscape of the thing is way, way more lunar than the urban meadow sort of thing that has been happening for the last couple of records."
He elaborates that the "curve ball" could surprise and challenge Death Cab's loyal fan base, telling Billboard that, "On [Plans] we were really making a lot of decisions based on what we felt other people were gonna think. But this record, there's this kind of slightly malicious glee that we all have that it sounds kind of crazy. It's pretty fun."
While the Death Cab record isn't expected until late May, Walla will release his solo debut, Field Manual, on January 29.
